BACKGROUND
I married my husband when he came home on leave from boot-camp. He was on his way to Germany for a three year stint with the United States Air Force. My new husband’s orders for Germany, after being married only a week, meant he had to leave me home with my parents until we saved enough money to buy me a ticket. The military did not recognize enlisted men’s wives in those days, so I worked two jobs to earn enough money to join him. Two years later, our first child was born overseas in a military hospital.
Today, my husband and I have been married for more than 42 years. We have four married children and fourteen wonderful grandchildren. I enjoy reading, playing games with grandchildren, and doing puzzles
with them. I also enjoy coloring with them in dollar-store coloring books and painting the granddaughter's fingernails.
Until recently, I was teaching children (ages 16 to 17) in Sunday School. Actually, I have been teaching in the church for the past thirty-five to forty years. I have taught adults (all ages) and children (ages 3
to 18). I love every child I teach, as if he or she are my own! As you might guess by the last comment, I take my responsibility as a teacher seriously.
Basically, I see myself as a congenial person who enjoys interacting with people. I especially enjoy being around positive-minded people who love life and are happy. Feeling very blessed, I have a strong desire to help people when I can. I look past the outside facade to see the person inside. The core of the person is who I love and appreciate.
Raised on an Idaho farm, I learned to work by helping my dad with chores. One chore that I remember fondly is, at five or six years old, driving a flat bed truck down rows while my dad tossed on bales of hay. When the truck reached the end of a row, I turned the wheel into the next one. Of course, I realize now that my dad had put the
truck in low gear so all I had to do was keep it straight and turn the wheel into the next row.
My husband have moved around a lot, partly because of the military stints and jobs he takes, but also because we want to be near grandchildren. We've lived in Germany, Idaho, California, Utah, Oregon, Indiana, and now Texas. Together, we visited Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Washington state, Iowa, Illinois, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Nevada. By myself, I visited sites in West Virginia and Washington D.C. (on my way to Germany). It was a thrill to see our nation's capitol and where so much history took place.) My uncle worked in the Pentagon so he took me around to meet the Secretary of Defense and other officials. I also saw the hall of Congress, the Library, and the Treasury.
We lived in so many places because my husband gets an itch to move about every five years. They also travel a lot because they love to see the world and this beautiful country called America. Via the military, her husband visited the Philippines, Japan, Spain, Guam, and Hawaii. "I told him he could go anywhere in the world without me," she said, "but not Hawaii." When his orders changed from Guam, he called to say "I have to go to Hawaii." She jokingly responded, "Have to? Oh darn! I’m sure that will be hard on you!"
She and her husband have not yet decided where they will retire, but it will likely be some place that is not too hot or too cold, with a stream and lots of trees.
HOBBIES
In short, my hobbies are oil painting, reading uplifting and self-improvement books, and writing. Reading good books opened up my mind to a world that I did not know existed. I am thankful for the ILD (International Leadership Development) business organization that encouraged me to read. I am also thankful that I am able to share my experience with people in the book who are searching for more peace in their lives. It warms my heart when people tell me how my insight has helped them.
As you notice by my background, traveling with my husband has become an additional hobby. I don't know where we will be living but we hope it will be some place in the mountains with trees and a creek. We love that type of living environment.
